00;00;16;16 - 00;00;18;18 So again, 00;00;18;18 - 00;00;23;01 I have been a proponent of Minecraft since forever. 00;00;23;13 - 00;00;26;17 I think the first time that I watched my son 00;00;26;25 - 00;00;31;11 use Redstone to make a complicated machine 00;00;32;02 - 00;00;36;26 inside the game, I realized the STEM capacity was outrageous. 00;00;36;26 - 00;00;39;26 Like, I think we look at Minecraft and say, like you 00;00;39;26 - 00;00;42;16 said, it just eight bit blocks that you're moving around, 00;00;43;20 - 00;00;47;00 but it is so much more exciting. 00;00;47;03 - 00;00;48;26 Yeah, there are so many layers to it. 00;00;48;26 - 00;00;52;01 Like if you get into the coding and like as you're in that, 00;00;52;01 - 00;00;55;07 it can just keep developing more and more skills in that. 00;00;55;17 - 00;01;00;24 And so I think one of the things is it would because I know that in past MOREnet 00;01;00;24 - 00;01;05;29 did have like resources within Minecraft of of building locations with students. 00;01;06;08 - 00;01;10;20 Yeah we had a server. 00;01;10;20 - 00;01;10;29 Yeah you guys had a server running and I think you’re running the pyramids 00;01;10;29 - 00;01;11;28 like you had all the pyramids 00;01;11;28 - 00;01;14;27 where we could go through and do tours with students through the pyramids. 00;01;15;10 - 00;01;18;12 And so I think like getting on board with the, 00;01;18;25 - 00;01;22;08 the current NASEF and looking at what the Rube 00;01;22;08 - 00;01;25;23 Goldberg challenge, I think is one of my favorites. 00;01;26;01 - 00;01;28;06 Oh, there used to be a 00;01;29;16 - 00;01;29;27 it was a 00;01;29;27 - 00;01;33;03 PC app and it was called The Incredible Machine. 00;01;33;29 - 00;01;37;19 And I played that obsessively. 00;01;37;22 - 00;01;38;20 Oh, yeah. 00;01;38;21 - 00;01;41;20 And it was you would just get a challenge and you would be 00;01;41;20 - 00;01;44;26 given pieces and a simple goal. 00;01;44;26 - 00;01;47;03 And they got bigger and bigger. 00;01;48;06 - 00;01;50;09 And I just I fell in love with them, 00;01;50;09 - 00;01;52;27 with Rube Goldberg machines, you know, 00;01;54;01 - 00;01;57;01 cracking egg and at least 60 steps, you know that. 00;01;57;05 - 00;01;59;12 Yeah. It's just it's so fun. 00;01;59;20 - 00;02;04;07 And the thing is, the part of playing Rube Goldberg in Minecraft 00;02;04;12 - 00;02;07;21 is not that it's going to fail because it's a mechanical machine 00;02;07;21 - 00;02;10;01 that doesn't like when we make things in Rube Goldberg. 00;02;10;01 - 00;02;11;06 There's always that possibility. 00;02;11;06 - 00;02;15;11 Like, I ran it this time and it didn't succeed because it flung the egg across. 00;02;15;19 - 00;02;17;29 It did something completely different and you're not gonna run into it. 00;02;17;29 - 00;02;20;11 But the creativity that the students come up with, 00;02;20;17 - 00;02;24;03 how to do all these different things, and then they're really deep diving 00;02;24;03 - 00;02;26;17 into the mechanics of what Minecraft can do. 00;02;27;07 - 00;02;29;28 That's where I get excited when I see some of the things and like, 00;02;30;03 - 00;02;31;18 they're like, Well, there's no way that could fail. 00;02;31;18 - 00;02;34;12 Well, yeah, it's because it's a it's, it's computer program. 00;02;34;12 - 00;02;37;07 And when we set a computer program, that's why we do those things. Yeah. 00;02;37;08 - 00;02;38;11 You know, it's kind of like teaching people, 00;02;38;11 - 00;02;43;00 Why do we do robotics and in program, the robotics and server have a person. 00;02;43;07 - 00;02;46;06 It's because every time we're going to do it, there is going to be that anomaly. 00;02;46;06 - 00;02;48;25 There's going to be that change in the program. 00;02;48;25 - 00;02;52;05 Whereas if we have the robots do it, it's going to be the same way every time. 00;02;52;14 - 00;02;57;11 And so I would love to get back into with with more and like really have our own 00;02;57;11 - 00;03;01;08 maybe Missouri challenges of what can we do, you know, farm craft, 00;03;02;19 - 00;03;03;24 the solar car. 00;03;03;24 - 00;03;05;09 I think there are so many other challenges 00;03;05;09 - 00;03;09;14 we could come up with in the state and say, okay, hey, you guys have this. 00;03;09;24 - 00;03;12;07 Let's see what you can do for this competition. 00;03;12;09 - 00;03;13;12 Let's make up competition. 00;03;13;12 - 00;03;15;11 So I think we can do cybersecurity. 00;03;15;11 - 00;03;17;00 I mean, there's so many you know how it is. 00;03;17;00 - 00;03;18;19 I know there's so many possibilities. 00;03;18;19 - 00;03;20;03 We're definitely doing 00;03;20;03 - 00;03;21;14 you know, we're doing the cybersecurity stuff 00;03;21;14 - 00;03;23;24 with like cyber dot org in the cybersecurity challenges, 00;03;23;24 - 00;03;27;06 but it's that kind of thing in the e-sports environment 00;03;27;06 - 00;03;32;18 and in Minecraft or, you know, whatever, whatever we can do to help. 00;03;32;18 - 00;03;34;02 I think that's the next step 00;03;34;02 - 00;03;37;19 that I want to explore because I think that's something that, you know, we've got 00;03;37;20 - 00;03;40;05 we keep saying, you know, well, we've got a makerspace, we've got a makerspace. 00;03;41;15 - 00;03;43;11 Yeah, but there's so much more to it than that. 00;03;43;11 - 00;03;47;21 And what we have is a space and technology available 00;03;48;01 - 00;03;51;03 that a lot of schools don't have to participate in these times. 00;03;51;17 - 00;03;52;17 So, yeah, 00;03;52;17 - 00;03;53;06 and I think 00;03;53;06 - 00;03;56;20 the one thing about the Minecraft and why I think this is a game changer, 00;03;56;20 - 00;03;59;28 doing it with Minecraft is what we what we found in these sports. 00;03;59;28 - 00;04;04;10 The thing that is really the draw is like I said this, the scholarships, right? 00;04;04;22 - 00;04;08;01 And if you can do that like we do, you can win an award like that. 00;04;08;01 - 00;04;09;24 You know, there's $1,000 reward. 00;04;09;24 - 00;04;14;24 But if you do something fantastic and here is programing and says, well, 00;04;14;24 - 00;04;18;05 let me give you a scholarship to come here because I like what you're doing here. 00;04;18;05 - 00;04;19;18 I see the creativity. 00;04;19;18 - 00;04;21;03 Like I said, there's so many different levels 00;04;21;03 - 00;04;24;09 to it's not just engineering, but we get creativity going on as well. 00;04;24;13 - 00;04;28;07 Graphic arts, you know, design, like there's all these other pieces 00;04;28;07 - 00;04;30;01 and components that are going in there. 00;04;30;01 - 00;04;34;00 I think as we develop that, we could see kids getting scholarships to go to school 00;04;34;00 - 00;04;37;09 because and like you said, get even get into the job of the background of it. 00;04;38;00 - 00;04;39;01 How amazing would that be? 00;04;40;17 - 00;04;44;25 I mean, this is like driving into it 00;04;44;26 - 00;04;47;03 Well, and I think a lot of the “why” comes out in that you know, it's 00;04;48;05 - 00;04;50;01 a lot of kids. 00;04;50;01 - 00;04;52;20 My daughter did this with Java writing. 00;04;52;20 - 00;04;53;09 She wrote a Java 00;04;53;09 - 00;04;57;08 mod and ended up being like a dragon that flew through the environment. 00;04;57;08 - 00;05;02;00 And she had big guys on the backside of Minecraft that were helping her 00;05;02;00 - 00;05;02;23 write this. 00;05;02;23 - 00;05;07;07 And she eventually got it, got it down and got it working. 00;05;07;07 - 00;05;09;18 And she walked by and she was having a problem 00;05;09;18 - 00;05;12;11 with some subroutine or something like that, not working like she wanted to. 00;05;12;11 - 00;05;15;05 And she asked me and I was like, No idea what you're doing. 00;05;15;21 - 00;05;17;03 No. Yeah, yeah. 00;05;17;03 - 00;05;17;13 You know, 00;05;17;13 - 00;05;20;21 I mean, we wanted to teach you coding and we started to do HTML with her 00;05;20;21 - 00;05;23;16 and she lost her mind. She was like, I hate is this stupid? 00;05;23;16 - 00;05;26;10 I don't see the point. And now I'm like, Well, wait a minute. 00;05;26;10 - 00;05;29;24 You just wrote a Java subroutine to make a dragon fly through Minecraft. 00;05;30;16 - 00;05;32;04 I can't do that. 00;05;32;04 - 00;05;34;07 Why did it why all of a sudden is coding cool? 00;05;34;08 - 00;05;37;06 Well, because it's a dragon and it's in Minecraft, right? 00;05;37;06 - 00;05;39;29 Right. Like, they can visualize it and they can see it in there. 00;05;39;29 - 00;05;41;17 And for them, like for us 00;05;41;17 - 00;05;44;10 HTML doing web design and stuff like that, we could see it. 00;05;44;20 - 00;05;48;11 But they literally are seeing their work in progress as their development. 00;05;48;13 - 00;05;50;18 And a lot of kids consider that they're game designer 00;05;50;25 - 00;05;53;22 and that's really a lot of kids want to be that that game designer. 00;05;53;22 - 00;05;55;22 And here they are. There's so much in Minecraft. 00;05;55;26 - 00;05;58;15 I thought it was interesting when we just started this year, 00;05;58;15 - 00;05;59;17 you know, those four girls are there 00;05;59;17 - 00;06;03;23 and we don't officially have a team because spring is when it happens. 00;06;03;23 - 00;06;05;13 What we were doing was 00;06;05;13 - 00;06;07;22 in one of the things I tell everybody is sometimes 00;06;07;22 - 00;06;10;05 you don't always start with a team. You start with a club, right? 00;06;10;13 - 00;06;15;14 And because you got to figure out the hows and whys and when and you know, 00;06;15;15 - 00;06;18;26 because it can be here every time, there's got to be this commitment level. 00;06;18;26 - 00;06;20;14 So maybe if I come as a 00;06;21;29 - 00;06;24;24 just we're not a team, we're just a club that hangs out. 00;06;24;24 - 00;06;26;23 I'm not required to be here all the time. 00;06;26;23 - 00;06;29;15 And then we find out, Oh, I really like this, so I really want to come. 00;06;29;16 - 00;06;32;05 I got to talk to my parents and I want to be here all the time. 00;06;32;05 - 00;06;34;28 But when we're So right now, these four girls are a club. 00;06;35;27 - 00;06;39;20 But it was funny because the guys that are there playing are like Minecraft. 00;06;40;07 - 00;06;42;05 You guys are doing stuff in Minecraft. 00;06;42;05 - 00;06;44;13 Can I quit and go play Minecraft? You know? 00;06;44;26 - 00;06;47;12 And these are guys that are Overwatch team, 00;06;48;11 - 00;06;51;21 like even Alex Cole was like, Can I go play Minecraft now? 00;06;51;21 - 00;06;53;08 You know, because I want to go play Minecraft with them. 00;06;53;08 - 00;06;55;02 I wanna see what they're doing, you know? 00;06;55;02 - 00;06;58;07 So Minecraft spans all the students, you know, 00;06;58;22 - 00;07;01;15 you're not going to see these four girls going over and playing Overwatch. 00;07;01;15 - 00;07;03;10 They're going to go and play Rocket League. 00;07;03;10 - 00;07;06;01 But it's amazing that the Rocket League players will come to Minecraft, 00;07;06;01 - 00;07;07;28 the Overwatch players will come to Minecraft. 00;07;07;28 - 00;07;11;02 You know, the Smash Brothers, everybody, all kids, 00;07;11;02 - 00;07;14;03 I think, have this commonality between Minecraft. 00;07;14;11 - 00;07;16;24 Well, it's it's not as threatening as some of those other games. 00;07;16;24 - 00;07;20;04 I mean, if you really boil it down and look at it, 00;07;20;04 - 00;07;23;20 it's just it's not as you're not you're not going to get into a fight. 00;07;23;20 - 00;07;27;15 You're not there's not that toxic back side to it that some games have. 00;07;27;15 - 00;07;29;09 Right. Right. 00;07;29;09 - 00;07;32;12 I think that's what turns a lot of especially girls off of it is because 00;07;32;12 - 00;07;36;04 they it'll it'll make you look at that and go this is dumb why are we 00;07;36;10 - 00;07;39;06 you know why are we do why are we talking trash talking to each other, you know. 00;07;39;10 - 00;07;39;14 Right. 00;07;41;05 - 00;07;43;12 I thought it was funny in our discord we were looking at when they said, 00;07;43;12 - 00;07;45;12 you know, we created the Minecraft in Discord 00;07;45;12 - 00;07;47;01 and that really blew it up 00;07;47;01 - 00;07;49;24 when they saw the Minecraft group in play, that was like, what? 00;07;49;28 - 00;07;50;29 You know, here it is. 00;07;50;29 - 00;07;52;09 And they're like, well, what are they going to you know, 00;07;52;09 - 00;07;56;24 are they playing Swordcraft like they are these competitive FPS in Minecraft? 00;07;57;03 - 00;07;58;21 And they're like, no, they're doing like these 00;07;58;21 - 00;08;00;19 robotic challenges and stuff like that. 00;08;00;19 - 00;08;03;16 And interesting that in turn the guys who are 00;08;03;25 - 00;08;06;24 first person shooters away are these competitive? 00;08;06;24 - 00;08;08;25 They're like, Oh really? 00;08;08;26 - 00;08;11;29 Oh, there's a challenge as a team, something besides each other. 00;08;12;02 - 00;08;13;24 Yeah, right. There's this thing that we can do. 00;08;13;24 - 00;08;14;20 And I've always said 00;08;14;20 - 00;08;18;27 that creativity just feeds right like every kid loves to create. 00;08;18;28 - 00;08;21;15 I always said that Minecraft is the digital sandbox. 00;08;21;15 - 00;08;25;09 Like when we were kids made roads and we made all these hills 00;08;25;09 - 00;08;28;14 and everything, the sandbox and and literally this is the digital sandbox. 00;08;28;14 - 00;08;32;29 This is where they can go in and just explore, build, design 00;08;33;03 - 00;08;38;02 and make what they see in their head come to life in a virtual environment. 00;08;39;09 - 00;08;40;24 I will tell you, this is 00;08;40;24 - 00;08;44;08 my story of probably why I'm so passionate about Minecraft. 00;08;45;13 - 00;08;49;21 Back when teacher gaming had Minecraft, you, I paid for it. 00;08;49;27 - 00;08;53;03 I paid for it out my own pocket for a summer program because I was like, 00;08;53;11 - 00;08;57;13 I'm willing to put forth my money to see this succeed. 00;08;57;24 - 00;08;59;22 And we broke up into three groups. 00;08;59;22 - 00;09;03;06 We broke up with the beginner Minecraft that had never played Minecraft before. 00;09;03;12 - 00;09;05;17 We broke up with two kids who had played Minecraft 00;09;05;17 - 00;09;10;20 but weren't experts and we had an expert level and just the 00;09;11;15 - 00;09;12;27 it was an amazing experiment. 00;09;12;27 - 00;09;14;22 Like this was so fantastic. 00;09;14;22 - 00;09;16;26 The things we developed from each one of these, 00;09;16;26 - 00;09;18;27 like the beginner Minecraft we literally had. 00;09;19;09 - 00;09;21;27 And the thing was in teacher games you could turn chat off. 00;09;21;27 - 00;09;24;29 So like one of the first things we got, we actually had people bullying each other 00;09;24;29 - 00;09;27;16 almost immediately in chat and we had to shut chat off 00;09;27;16 - 00;09;29;04 and they're like, Oh, you can do that. 00;09;29;04 - 00;09;30;25 You're like, Oh, you were watching us. 00;09;30;25 - 00;09;31;25 And we're like, Yeah. 00;09;31;25 - 00;09;34;17 And the thing is, I'll say about that, the one girl, 00;09;34;17 - 00;09;36;15 I was literally over her shoulder as she was doing this, 00;09;36;15 - 00;09;38;19 and I looked at the teacher like, Yeah, let's cut the chat. 00;09;38;19 - 00;09;41;15 You know, the amazing thing is later in the week 00;09;41;22 - 00;09;44;19 I watched that girl because a new girl had just come into the class 00;09;44;19 - 00;09;46;29 who didn't have a clue and she jumped up out of her chair. 00;09;46;29 - 00;09;49;10 She had never played Minecraft before, so this week 00;09;49;29 - 00;09;52;05 she jumped up on her chair, went over to this girl, said, Here, 00;09;52;07 - 00;09;54;12 you need to do this and you need to do this. 00;09;54;12 - 00;09;58;15 Like I was seeing a social change happening right in front of me. 00;09;58;22 - 00;10;02;08 And I was like, This is me, our main group. 00;10;02;08 - 00;10;03;12 They were just building stuff. 00;10;03;12 - 00;10;07;19 But I we told them, we said, we want you to make a model in Minecraft 00;10;08;01 - 00;10;11;00 and, you know, comparable to something in the real world. 00;10;11;05 - 00;10;12;27 And I just love that. 00;10;12;27 - 00;10;14;21 Like Taj Mahal, 00;10;14;21 - 00;10;17;10 you know, the way we were seeing the Dubai Tower, 00;10;17;10 - 00;10;20;22 like some kid literally made the Devi Tower and I was like, What did you do? 00;10;20;23 - 00;10;23;11 Go home and dissolve? Like, This is a massive event. 00;10;23;11 - 00;10;25;18 So we had these challenges and it's three weeks of summer school, 00;10;25;18 - 00;10;28;02 and each week they wrote like they they went out of science 00;10;28;02 - 00;10;31;27 and they would go somewhere else and we had kids coming back for credit recovery. 00;10;32;10 - 00;10;34;04 And they were speeding through credit recovery 00;10;34;04 - 00;10;37;01 because they were told, if I get done with recovery, I can go play Minecraft. 00;10;37;12 - 00;10;40;22 Like again, these incentives that we were having that we were seeing 00;10;40;29 - 00;10;43;27 and and we were taking pictures of the guys, stuff that they built 00;10;43;27 - 00;10;44;26 and then putting it out there. 00;10;44;26 - 00;10;47;23 And of course, again, going back to showing off their designs, 00;10;48;22 - 00;10;51;12 the best one we had though, was the accelerator. 00;10;51;19 - 00;10;54;06 So these are the kids who live read Minecraft, right? 00;10;54;06 - 00;10;56;15 And we separated them into two groups 00;10;56;26 - 00;10;58;23 and said, okay, here's the you're on an island. 00;10;58;23 - 00;11;00;28 But you know, the island's going to flood. 00;11;00;28 - 00;11;02;12 What are you going to do? 00;11;02;12 - 00;11;05;06 That was all the instruction we gave them to go and Google Docs, 00;11;06;01 - 00;11;10;22 make a game plan, go five days to just do that, 00;11;10;28 - 00;11;14;11 and then we just sit back and wait for the social experiment. 00;11;14;18 - 00;11;17;21 And it was so funny because my son Chris at the time was helping us do this 00;11;18;10 - 00;11;20;18 because we had multiple servers running for each one of them. 00;11;20;26 - 00;11;24;21 And he said, I always waited to see which team figured out first 00;11;24;21 - 00;11;26;12 who was going to be team captain, who was going 00;11;26;12 - 00;11;29;24 to become the natural leader, and then also figure out 00;11;29;26 - 00;11;31;28 job responsibilities like who was going to do stuff. 00;11;32;03 - 00;11;35;09 And he said it always like two or three days in, 00;11;35;20 - 00;11;39;18 they would quit and go, Hey, hey, they're going faster. 00;11;39;18 - 00;11;41;04 That's what you do this. You do this. 00;11;41;04 - 00;11;43;12 Like all of a sudden, it just it was natural, you know? 00;11;43;13 - 00;11;45;29 I mean, it was just organic. 00;11;46;04 - 00;11;46;21 And he said 00;11;46;21 - 00;11;51;03 every time all three weeks they come in and these were all lone stars, right? 00;11;51;04 - 00;11;52;25 Like, I play the best Minecraft. 00;11;52;25 - 00;11;54;29 I know what I'm doing. I don't need any help. 00;11;54;29 - 00;11;57;04 And you just see this, this organic like. 00;11;57;04 - 00;12;01;13 And so I tell you, Minecraft does so much more than just playing a game. 00;12;01;15 - 00;12;02;22 There is so much more to it. 00;12;02;22 - 00;12;05;02 And I love because I get to come in and judge 00;12;05;02 - 00;12;07;10 whether they succeeded or failed their thing. 00;12;07;10 - 00;12;13;22 And like one kid made an ark and they built a they like the whole team 00;12;13;22 - 00;12;17;11 made this huge ark and it had a farm on it and had all the animals. 00;12;17;11 - 00;12;19;01 They had all the animals on it. 00;12;19;01 - 00;12;22;07 And it was like, well, if the water level floods, you guys are safe. 00;12;22;14 - 00;12;24;15 And one kids, they build it up on the top of it. 00;12;24;15 - 00;12;27;14 And they just built this huge thing on top like it was just so amazing. 00;12;27;14 - 00;12;29;24 Watch it one one underground and sealed it up. 00;12;29;25 - 00;12;34;06 Like the the creativity that I saw was just fantastic and.
